    Marching Toward a Greener Future

At Gordon’s Window Decor, we are greatly concerned with environmental awareness.  That’s one reason why we’re so proud of our EcoSmart Insulating Shades – they save energy, which means your home requires less power to heat or keep cool, which means less fossil fuels used to generate that power.  As a raving environmentalist myself, I was really excited to start a job here, where I can help get these nifty green improvements into as many homes as possible.  But that’s a different story…

This past weekend, I was able to join more than a thousand other Vermonters at the People’s Climate March in New York City!  To say it was incredible, powerful, and unifying is an understatement.

The march took place on Sunday the 21st, two days before the United Nations held a summit in the city to discuss reversing climate change.  The march demonstrated the peoples’ solidarity in breaking our dependence on fossil fuels and that we and don’t want the issue of climate change to continue to be skirted around and dealt with as though it were a distant threat.

Originally, there were expected to be 100,000 marchers.  There were 400,000!  The 2.5 mile march was completed by 4 miles of humans from all walks of life: students, hospital-workers, union workers, politicians, movie stars, environmental organizations, and so on.  Climate change is a political, economical, environmental, social, and human rights issue, so we all walked.  There were over 2,000 other rallies in over 150 countries that day, too.  From Paris, to India, to America, the entire world is marching for a cleaner future!

There were 18 busses from Vermont – most subsidized by fundraisers and donors like Ben & Jerry’s to make the tickets easily affordable.  I met a lot of great people, reveled in the feeling of massively-shared environmental responsibility, and was reminded of what’s worth fighting for.  We are privileged to live in this green state, but it will take us all to keep it green.  The Northeast Kingdom and Lake Champlain are among the treasures here that could, if we don’t stand up against it, be destroyed by oil/gas pipelines and pollution.

You can view the summary of the UN summit here.  Let’s hope our leaders and we marchers keep up this momentum as we face the defining issue of our time.  My mom always reminds me that it’s important to work on bettering your own little corner of the earth – think of ways you can use less energy.  Unplug appliances, take short showers, and of course, keep your home properly insulated all year!
