2014 Color, Design, and You.
As 2013 draws to an end, we are filled with the imagination, excitement, and hope that so commonly accompany the promise of the New Year. These feelings are easily encapsulated in Pantone’s recently declared color of 2014: Radiant Orchid.
“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” – Pantone
Throughout my research on the matter, however, I came across a handful of other notable new hues, patterns, and tips for decorating the home that I would love to share. This day in age, creativity and self-expression are more proudly exercised than ever, so for 2014, dare to be bold, dare to make changes, and let your true colors shine.
Consider the proclaimed Radiant Orchid or close second Dazzling Blue (reminiscent of the bright cobalt used by artist Yves Klein), especially to enhance more neutral areas. Radiant Orchid also works well with light yellow, teal, or deep greens. I am such a fan of these two colors.
If you prefer softer shades, colors like cayenne, placid blue, hemlock (similar to mint), and certain yellows are cheerful, subtle, and fresh. And let’s not forget timeless statements like sophisticated shades of gray and white. The colors of 2014 offer a palette for every style.
In terms of design, 2014 welcomes the usage of geometric and floral patterns. Geometric patterns are carrying over from 2013, but in ’14, keep them softened or muted. Floral patterns are great for softening and replacing hard angles. These patterns are best introduced in the form of cushions, pillows, throws, and curtains. Keep in mind, these patterns often need quieter backgrounds to avoid being overwhelming. But if you happen to be a fan of busier designs, disregard that last statement and continue to supply the world with your pizzazz.
Some argue that an ongoing trend is to keep your space open, airy, and minimalistic, but if you’re like me and have a handful of objets d’art to keep on display, go right ahead! Expression is all about yourself, whether you’re a Radiant Orchid, a Placid Blue, whether you like floral patterns and gilded picture frames or a nice, clean slate, in 2014, allow your home to match your heart. And if you’re not sure where to begin, we’re here to help!
