October is National Window Cord Safety Month

We are a family business. First and foremost. We have children of our own, so of course October is a very important month for us.

Child Safety

Along with Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), together we are urging parents to replace older treatments with today’s safer products.

Please take a moment to check your window treatments and coverings that pose safety threats to your children.

We recommend that parents use only cordless shades in homes with younger children. The CPSC has noted that window treatments/coverings are one of the Top 5 hidden hazards in homes in America. WHOA.

Toddlers and infants have died from accidental strangulation due to window cords. A large portion of these deaths, have resulted from older products that never had the appropriate safety devices. It’s such a simple thing to overlook, that’s why we are taking this seriously and bringing it to your attention.

“CPSC recommends that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords be used in homes with young children. They are available today in the marketplace and will prevent window blind strangulation. Make sure all window shades, blinds and draperies in your home do not have cords that are within the reach of a child.”

Cordless Shades

Gordon’s also urges parents to comply with the following cord-safety precautions:

1. All window cords need to be well out of the reach of any children.

2. Cribs, beds and similar surfaces need to be placed away from windows.

3. Cord stops need to be properly adjusted and installed to limit inner-cord movement.

4. Homes with young children should only have cordless coverings.

5. Tasseled pull cords should be as short as possible. If your treatments have continuous-loop pull cords, they should be tight and anchored to the wall or floor.
